Moscow:

Russia today said it was closing the Moscow offices of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in retaliation for Ottawa’s ban on Russian state media outlet RT.

“It was decided to take retaliatory action against the Canadian operation, including the closure of the Moscow offices of the Canadian television and radio broadcaster CBC, including the recognition of its journalists and the revocation of Russian visas,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria. Zakharova says.

Canada formally banned RT and RT France from its airwaves in March, saying their programming was “inconsistent with the standards of Canadian broadcasting”.

RT and state-controlled outlets Sputnik have been blocked in most Western countries since Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, accusing it of spreading propaganda.

Ms Zakharova said Canada’s decision was “rasophobic” and that the CBC had become “propaganda noise”.

“Any alternative approach is considered Kremlin confusion,” he said.

Canada has been a strong supporter of Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and in pushing for tougher sanctions against Moscow.

Moscow has responded by imposing travel bans on hundreds of Canadians, including senior officials, lawmakers and journalists.
