Uvalde, United States:
The teenager Salvador Ramos first shot his grandmother before shooting at an elementary school in Texas – killing 19 children, officials said.
The 18-year-old, who died while police were trying to arrest him, was a U.S. citizen and a student in a small community near the Mexican border where the tragedy took place.
A facial shot of Ramos circulating in the local media showed a young man with brown hair staring at him with an expressionless gaze.
Eric Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety said “the first incident was at their grandmother’s home where she shot her grandmother,” adding that she was later airlifted to a medical facility.
A 66-year-old woman was admitted to a San Antonio hospital in critical condition after being shot, according to health officials, who gave no further details.
After firing on his grandmother, Ramos fled the scene in a car equipped with a bulletproof jacket and a rifle, Mr Estrada said.
He then crashed into a ditch outside Rob Elementary School, exited and headed for the school, where law enforcement officers tried to stop him but failed.
At 11:30 a.m. local time (1630 GMT), Ramos entered the school and opened fire.
“And then from there, when he left and entered several classrooms and started firing his firearms,” Mr. Estrada told CNN.
The end of the school year
Thursday was the last day of the school year for 500 Rob Elementary students, ranging in age from five to 11 and mostly Hispanic.
Mr Estrada said there were no reports of a vehicle being chased in the area, indicating that the traffic accident was unprovoked.
Abbott said two police officers were slightly injured in the gunfight.
Abbott said investigators were working to obtain “detailed background information on the matter, its purpose, the type of weapon used, the legal authority to keep it, and to conduct a comprehensive crime-scene investigation and restructuring,” Abbott said.
According to Mr Estradar, it is unclear whether Ramos has fought law enforcement before.
Uvalade School District Police Chief Pete Aredondo, who is in charge of the investigation, said Ramos acted alone.
An Instagram account linked to the suspect, which was later removed, showed several pictures of the young man.
In two black and white selfies, she wears hair up to her shoulders and looks like a hoodie.
Other photos show a magazine and a semi-automatic rifle.
