Ramallah, Palestinian Territory:
Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian during clashes in the West Bank on Thursday, killing a third Palestinian in the occupied territories in 24 hours, the health ministry said.
Violence erupted in the Dhesheh refugee camp near Bethlehem, the ministry said in a statement, adding that the dead man had been identified as Ayman Muhaisen, 29. He was the third Palestinian to be killed in less than 24 hours after a woman approached him with a knife early Wednesday morning. One person was killed that day in an Israeli operation in the North West Bank.
Israeli security forces have stepped up their operations in the West Bank in recent months, conducting almost daily raids to arrest suspects following deadly attacks inside Israel.
The military says troops entered Dhesheh to arrest a Palestinian man suspected of being a “terrorist” and that he was seen with a volley of petrol bombs and cement blocks. They respond with live rounds.
Late Wednesday, Israeli troops launched an offensive in the village of Yabad outside Jenin to destroy the attacker’s home in a March attack that killed five Beni BRAC men in the Tel Aviv suburb.
The health ministry said a Palestinian died at Jenin’s hospital after the operation. He was admitted in critical condition, with “live bullet wounds to the chest and thighs”.
The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that six Palestinians were wounded in the Israeli attack.
The military says it has arrested the “terrorist’s father.”
It said it had informed the gunman’s family on April 17, Dia Hamarsha, of the demolition order against the family home.
Israel regularly destroys the homes of those responsible for attacks on Israelis.
The practice, which often provokes tensions, has been criticized by critics as a collective punishment. Israel insists it resists the attack.
On Wednesday morning, 31-year-old Gofran Warasna was shot dead near Hebron after Israeli troops “advanced” on the Southwest coast with knives, the military said.
Nineteen people, mostly Israeli civilians – including 18 inside Israel and one Jewish settler – have been killed in attacks by Palestinian and Israeli Arabs since late March.
Israeli security forces have responded by conducting raids inside Israel and the West Bank, especially in the northern district of Jenin’s Flashpoint. Three Israeli Arab assailants and a police commando were killed.
Thirty-eight Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank – suspected militants but also non-combatants, including an Al Jazeera journalist who was covering an operation in Jenin and standing by.
