China on Wednesday launched a drone carrier with a type of artificial intelligence system that includes dozens of autonomous drones, ships and submersibles for maritime research and surveillance, according to the South China Morning Post.
The drone carrier, capable of self-propelled, 88-meter-long, 14-meter-wide and 6-meter-deep, can be remotely controlled or navigated autonomously in open water, as well as creating a network. Monitor targets and contribute to maritime security, SCMP added.
According to the state-run Science and Technology Daily, automated ships, which can be operated remotely and can navigate autonomously over vast oceans, will be a powerful tool for the nation to conduct marine scientific research and observations.
This ship is named ‘Zhu Hai Yun’. It has a speed of 18 knots and can carry dozens of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles. Intelligent Mobile Ocean Stereo Observing System (IMOSOS), developed by South Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Zhuhai), also known as the “Southern Ocean Laboratory” of Sun Yat-sen University.
According to a statement from shipbuilder CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipping Co, a fleet of autonomous drones, ships and submarine carriers could be deployed to a specific sea area and conduct “three-dimensional dynamic surveillance”.
The ship is expected to increase the efficiency and level of ocean observation and help develop better marine scientific and technological talent and improve innovation, the company added.
